Henry David Jocelyn
Henry David Jocelyn FBA (born August 22, 1933 in Bega , New South Wales , † October 22, 2000 in Oxford ) was a British classical scholar of Australian origin.
Life
Henry David Jocelyn studied at the University of Sydney , where he graduated with honors in 1954. He then taught at a Teaching Fellowship at the Department of Latin and deepened his studies at St John's College of the University of Cambridge , where he at Charles Brink his doctoral thesis on the poet Ennius wrote. In 1957 Jocelyn received the First with the award starred and lettered . At the same time he received the Sandys Studentship , which enabled him to study at the British School at Rome . During this time he also got to know the Ennius researcher Scevola Mariotti , who had a great influence on him.
In 1959 Jocelyn returned to the University of Sydney, where he initially taught as a lecturer in Latin . In 1963 he was appointed reader , in 1969 he was appointed personal chair. He turned down various positions at universities abroad (USA and Germany). It was not until 1973 that he moved to the University of Manchester , where he took the Hulme Chair of Latin . He stayed in Manchester until he retired in 1996. In 1982 he was elected a member of the British Academy . In 1995 he received an honorary doctorate ( Doctor of Letters ) from the University of Sydney.
Since 1987 Jocelyn worked as a flag reader for the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae . In 1994 he was appointed a British Academy Delegate to the International Thesaurus Commission.
