James EG Zetzel
James Eric Guttman Zetzel (born March 26, 1947 in London ) is an American classical philologist ( Latinist ).
Life
Zetzel is the son of Elizabeth Rosenberg Zetzel, a psychoanalyst who lived in Boston, and the psychiatrist Eric Guttman, who lived in London. After studying at Harvard University and the Institute of Classical Studies at the University of London , he received his doctorate in 1973 with a dissertation on Latin Textual Criticism in Antiquity . After a short time at Brown University (1974/75 visiting assistant professor) he became an assistant professor at Princeton University in 1975 and an associate professor there in 1981. Since 1986 Zetzel has taught as Professor of Classics at Columbia University in New York . Since 2008 he has been Anthon Professor of the Latin Language and Literature there .
He served on the editorial boards of Classical Philology and the Bryn Mawr Classical Review ; from 1983 to 1986 he was editor of the Transactions of the American Philological Association .
Since May 2013 he has been married to Katharina Volk , who also researches and teaches at Columbia University.
Research priorities
Zetzel works on Latin literature of the first century BC. BC, especially on Cicero , Catullus , Horace , Virgil and Properz , on the political philosophy of antiquity, on erudition and on the intellectual life in Rome as well as on the history of classical philology. He devoted special research to textual criticism in Rome and ancient forgeries as well as the appropriation of Greek literature in Ciceros Rome. He has contributed articles on Catullus, Horace and Properz to the corresponding volumes of the Oxford Readings in Classical Studies and articles on the Cambridge Companions on Cicero and Virgil.
Awards
Zetzel has held research fellowships with the American Council of Learned Societies , the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation.
