Vincenzo Di Benedetto (born January 12, 1934 in Altomonte , † July 19 or 20, 2013 in Pisa ) was an Italian classical philologist .

Life

The son of the tailor Saverio Di Benedetto and his wife Maria Gaetana, b. Santoro, grew up in Saracena ( Calabria ) and attended the humanistic high school in Castrovillari . He studied from 1952 to 1958 in Pisa (as a scholarship holder of the Scuola Normale Superiore ) and Oxford ( Corpus Christi College ). His teachers included Aurelio Peretti , Augusto Campana , Alessandro Perosa , Ignazio Cazzaniga , Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli , Vittorio Bartoletti and Eduard Fraenkel . Outside the university he received significant impulses from his friend, the Latinist Sebastiano Timpanaro and his mother, the philosophy historian Maria Timpanaro Cardini . From 1969 until his retirement in 2006 he taught Greek literature at the University of Pisa , and from 1971 to 1993 also at the Scuola Normale Classical Philology . He had been suffering from Parkinson's disease since 1996 and had to use a wheelchair since 2006 , but worked until shortly before his death.

Since May 14, 1972, he was married to the high school literature teacher Diana Fiorini ; their son Saverio was born on November 27, 1972.

His students include scholars such as Luigi Battezzato , Franco Ferrari , Alessandro Lami , Maria Chiara Martinelli , Enrico Medda , Daniela Manetti , Maria Pia Pattoni and Amneris Roselli .

His specialties included the history of Greek grammar , Greek tragedy (especially Euripides ), the so-called Hippocratic corpus , Sappho , and the Homeric epics , but also Dante , Foscolo , and Alessandro Manzoni . He published numerous monographs , but also bilingual editions, which were aimed at both a wider audience and specialists. They received less attention in German-speaking countries, but his last major work, the bilingual annotated edition of the Odyssey (2010), was described by Barbara Graziosi in her review as "a monumental achievement". But the selection of his little writings, which Riccardo Di Donato published under the title Il richiamo del testo in 2007, fills four thick volumes and contains some of his most important research achievements, such as the proof that Aristotle reproduced his sources much more reliably than he did for a long time was suspected.
