Dieter Mewes (born December 18, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German graduate engineer who deals with mechanical engineering / process engineering and headed the Institute for Process Engineering at the Leibniz University in Hanover until 2006.

Career

Mewes studied mechanical engineering / process engineering at the TU Berlin from 1959 to 1966 and then worked there as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Process Engineering at Brauer. He received his doctorate in 1970, and completed his habilitation two years later . In 1979 he was appointed adjunct professor at the TU Berlin.

From 1973 to 1982 he worked for Degussa (now Evonik Degussa ) in various managerial positions: Research in basic process engineering operations, Hanau-Wolfgang , industrial engineering, Degussa Antwerpen NV, Vice President Engineering, Degussa Corp., USA, department director, Degussa AG .

In 1982 Mewes accepted the call from Leibniz University in Hanover . There he headed the Institute of Process Engineering as a professor until he retired in 2006.

In addition to voluntary work in various research funding bodies, he was a member of the Senate and a member of the main committee for the German Research Foundation (DFG), as well as an elected expert, including chairman of the expert committee "Mechanical and Process Engineering" for 4 years. Mewes has been a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences since 1995 .

Mewes as a rowing athlete

  • 1965: German champion in double sculls [1] ( rowing )
  • 1966 and 1967: German university champion in single (rowing)

Focus of work

In close cooperation with industry, he carried out numerous basic research work in the areas of mass transport and heat transfer in single and multi-phase flows using laser measurement technology , holography and various tomographic measurement and visualization methods. Further areas of work were multiphase flows in the field of safety technology for nuclear reactors and chemical plants as well as in the field of oil and gas production technology , rubber technology and the rheology and processing of polymer materials. Together with Julius Peter, Manfred Hallensleben, the German Institute for Rubber Technology and the Association of the German Rubber Industry, he conceived the advanced training course in rubber technology at the Leibniz University of Hanover in 1985 and headed it until 2006.
