Athletic career

Schirrmeister began to play organized football at the agricultural company sports community (BSG) Traktor in Falka near Gera. At the age of 16 he was delegated to BSG Wismut Gera in 1968, where he initially played in the junior team. In 1971 he was taken over into the men's division and until 1973 was used in the 2nd team, which played in the third-rate district league. After he had won the district championship with Wismut II in the summer of 1973, the 1.73 m tall defensive player moved up to the first team for the 1973/74 season, which was represented in the second-rate GDR league . At the end of the season, Wismut was the season winner with Schirrmeister in the GDR league and participated in the promotion to the league. There, however, the Geraer failed as the last of five teams. 1975 Gera failed a second time in the promotion round.

After a second place in the GDR league in 1976, he was promoted to the top division in 1977 in the third attempt. In the 30 point and promotion games, Schirrmeister was used in 24 games in which he scored three goals. Wismut Gera was only able to hold out in the top division for a year. In the 1977/78 season, which lasted 26 games, the team achieved only one victory, but suffered 21 defeats. In the 75 goals conceded, the worst record of all 14 teams, Schirrmeister played a major role as a defender. He had played 19 point games, started as a pre-stopper and later usually played left-back.

After relegation, Schirrmeister stayed with BSG Wismut Gera until the end of the 1980/81 season, which was back in the GDR league during this time. From the summer of 1979, he held the position of team captain. In 1981 Schirrmeister withdrew from competitive sports.
