Dieter Uhl (* 1968 in Kriegsfeld ) is a German palaeobotanist and section head for paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental research at the Senckenberg Research Institute and Nature Museum in Frankfurt . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " D.Uhl ".

Life

Uhl studied biology at the University of Kaiserslautern from 1990 to 1994 (Diploma 1994) . From 1996 to 1999 he completed a doctoral degree in geology at the University of Tübingen , where he received his doctorate in 1999 with a thesis on "Leaf venation density as a climate and environmental proxy". From 2000 to 2002 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the research center for paleobotany at the University of Münster and from 2002 to 2004 again at the University of Tübingen. In 2005 and 2006 he was a Feodor Lynen fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. In 2005 he completed his habilitation in palaeontology at the University of Tübingen . Since 2007 he has been working as a scientist at the Senckenberg Research Institute and Nature Museum in Frankfurt, where he has headed the paleoclimate and palaeo-environmental research section since 2010. In 2010 the University of Tübingen awarded him the title of adjunct professor . Uhl has also been the head of the Department of Paleontology and Historical Geology at the Senckenberg Research Institute and Nature Museum in Frankfurt since 2013.

At the Senckenberg Research Institute and Nature Museum in Frankfurt, Uhl is responsible for looking after the GeoArchiv Marburg, the former collection of the Geological-Paleontological Institute of the University of Marburg. He is the first to describe various fossil plant species.

Research priorities

His research focuses on the evolution of terrestrial ecosystems as a function of abiotic factors during the last 300 million years, the reconstruction of paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental conditions with the help of fossil plants, and the taphonomy of plant macrofossils. Stratigraphically, his focus is on the Upper Paleozoic , the Cretaceous , and the Paleogene . For several years, Uhl has been dealing with vegetation fires in the history of the earth as part of various international collaborations .
