Agnes Taar

Agnes Taar (real name Agnes-Elsa Blaubrük , Estonian Kajara , born September 5 July / September 17,  1897 greg. In Maru, Halliste municipality ; † December 7, 1976 in Tartu ) was an Estonian writer .

Life

Taar graduated from high school as an external student in Pärnu in 1916 and was an elementary school teacher a year later after completing a few pedagogical courses. In this profession she worked at various schools until 1925. After a year (1927–1928) as a postal worker in Viljandi , she lived from 1928 as a freelance writer in Tartu.

Taar was 1931-1932 with the magazine Eesti Naine ('The Estonian Woman') and in 1940 was accepted into the Estonian Writers' Union. After the political upheavals in Estonia, however, she was again excluded from the association in 1950. In 1976 she and her husband committed suicide.

Agnes Taar made her debut in 1924 with stories and poems for children and published her first children's book in 1928. The verses in it were "cumbersome and technically incorrect in places", but later collections reached a higher level. Since the early 1930s, Taar has been writing plays for adults, which were characterized by “colorful folk language” and “beautiful situation comedy”. The pieces were played a lot at the time, but ultimately did not stand up to the ravages of time.

In many of her works, Taar, comparable to Helmi Mäelo, dealt with questions of women and emancipation. In 1938 and 1940 she published two highly autobiographical development novels that met with mixed feedback. While one critic complained that the second volume straying around and on the run offers nothing more than an "outdated morality", they were crossed out as "successful" elsewhere.
