Aira Kaal

Aira Kaal (until 1938 Alma-Vilhelmine Kaal , from 1939 Aira Hone ; * 25 October jul. / 7 November  1911 greg. On the farm Tiidu, village Mui , today rural community Saaremaa , Saaremaa island , Estonia ; †  7 April 1988 in Tartu ) was an Estonian writer .

life and work

Aira Kaal graduated from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Tartu in 1940 . Before finishing her studies, she had already published several works of fiction.

Kaal welcomed the Soviet occupation of Estonia and the Communists' seizure of power in 1940. In the same year she joined the CPSU .

After completing her studies, Aira Kaal worked as a journalist . During the German occupation of Estonia (1941-1944) she was active behind the Soviet front.

From 1945 to 1950 Kaal was a lecturer in Marxism-Leninism . She also wrote poems in which she praised Stalin and the party. In 1951 Kaal was expelled from the CPSU. In 1955, after the de-Stalinization , she was accepted back into the party.

In October 1980 Kaal was one of the co-signers of the " Letter of Forty ". It demanded forty Estonian intellectuals by the Soviet authorities the preservation of the Estonian language , showed sympathy for the youth protests in Estonia and turned indirectly against the Kremlin policy of Russification in the Baltic States .

Aira Kaal was married to the English Romance scholar and literary scholar Arthur Robert Hone (1915–1972). He taught at the University of Tartu.

In 1971 Aira Kaal was awarded the title of "Honored Writer of the Estonian SSR ". In 1978 she received the Juhan Smuul Prize .
