He was one of the five sons of Christoph Schardt, who owned the Gleina knight's seat . Together with his older brother Balthasar Schardt, he was the owner of the estate he had inherited from his father in 1592, while his brother Georg moved to Zöbigker and bought an estate there. Georg Schardt moved back to Gleina at the beginning of 1598, after having acquired his own property here, which shortly after fell to his two brothers Balthasar and Dietrich, as he died childless in July 1598.

Since his brother Balthasar ran into more and more debts, including several at drinking parties, in 1619 he was forced to sell his share of his father's knightly seat in Gleina to Georg Sebastian von Osterhausen , while Dietrich continued to take over the other half of the estate until his death shortly before Christmas 1636 owned. In the end he was also depressed by serious debts.

His only surviving son, Hans Georg Schardt, inherited his father's property, but he died childless in July 1637 and Gleina fell to Balthasar Schardt's son Philipp, Dietrich Schardt's nephew.

In 1625 Dietrich Schardt became a member of the Fruit Bringing Society and remained so until his death.
