Dietrich von Werben

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dietrich (Latin Teodericus comes de Wirbene ; † 1183 or later) was Count von Werben , today Burgwerben near Weißenfels in Saxony-Anhalt .

Life

Dietrich was a son of Albrecht the Bear , the first Margrave of Brandenburg and his wife Sophie . His brothers included Margrave Otto I of Brandenburg , Bishop Siegfried of Brandenburg and Duke Bernhard of Saxony . He married Mathilde (Mechthild), a daughter of Landgrave Ludwig II of Thuringia and sister of Landgrave Ludwig III. , the marriage resulted in a son. He received the name of the father.

In 1147 Dietrich was mentioned for the first time at the side of his father and a few brothers, then several times. He stayed at their side on several court and princely days. After his father's death in 1170, he received the county court. With his brothers Otto, Hermann and Bernhard he opposed Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, who wanted to take over the county of Plötzky. Landgrave Ludwig von Thuringia, his brother-in-law, damaged Werben Castle in 1173. During the fighting he was seriously injured by an arrow. In later years he made a pilgrimage to Christ's tomb.

He was Vogt of the Cistercian monastery in Goseck and made donations to the monasteries Obernkirchen and Oldisleben . He was mentioned for the last time in 1183 and presumably died in the same year. The county of Werben fell to his brother Bernhard, since Dietrich's only son had died before his father.

Dietrich is not identical with the commander of the same name of the Johanniterkommende Werben on the Elbe.
