Digital Research, Inc. ( DR or DRI ) was an American software manufacturer headquartered in Pacific Grove , California . a. brought the operating systems CP / M and DR-DOS as well as the user interface GEM onto the market.

Digital Research was founded by Gary Kildall in 1976. This made DRI the first large software company in the microcomputer world and the leading manufacturer of operating systems for personal computers until the early 1980s . Digital Research should also supply the operating system for IBM's first PC. However, the negotiations turned out to be too difficult. So commissioned IBM ado the smaller company Microsoft (then provider of BASIC - Interpreter for home and personal computer) with the task.

Digital Research developed an MS-DOS compatible operating system called DR-DOS , which at times achieved a market share of up to 15%.

Even the attempt to compete with the Microsoft Windows versions , which were still relatively unsuccessful in the mid-1980s , with GEM , a user interface using window technology , was only initially successful. With version 3.0 of Windows, Digital Research came under increasing pressure and the end of GEM was only a matter of time. Although GEM was used as the surface of Atari ST computers for a significantly longer period , Digital Research was out of the running as a manufacturer of operating systems in the early 1990s. In 1991, DRI was sold to Novell for $ 79.5 million .
