Dimitar (Димитър) is the Bulgarian equivalent of the male given name of Greek origin Dimitrios (Δημήτριος). The name is originally derived from the ancient Greek goddess Demeter . Due to the popularity of Saint Dimitrios in Orthodox states, the name is widespread in Eastern Europe. In everyday life in Bulgaria, however, the short form of the name, Mitko , is usually used.
The feminine form of the name in Bulgaria is Dimitrina or Димитрина .
