The name was derived from the Greek given name Dimitrios (Δημήτριος, in ancient pronunciation Demetrios ). This originally referred to an affiliation with the Greek goddess Demeter in antiquity.
In the Kievan Rus , the name was popularized by Saint Demetrios of Thessaloniki , to whom some cathedrals were also dedicated.
