Dmitry Sitkovetsky
Dmitri Sitkowetski ( Russian Дмитрий Юлианович Ситковетский , scientific transliteration Dmitrij Sitkovetskij ; born September 27, 1954 in Baku ) is a Russian violinist and conductor .
Life
Sitkowetski is the son of the pianist Bella Davidovich and the violinist Julian Sitkowetski (1925-1958). He studied at the Moscow Conservatory and from 1977 at the New York Juilliard School .
In 1979 he won the Fritz Kreisler Competition and played as a violinist with many well-known orchestras. His transcription of Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations for String Trio , which premiered in 1985 on the occasion of Bach's 300th birthday at the Korsholm Music Festival and is dedicated to the pianist Glenn Gould , who died a few years earlier, is well known.
Since 1990 Sitkowetski has also worked as a conductor. From 1996 to 2001 he was chief conductor of the Ulster Orchestra Belfast and from 2002 to 2005 principal guest conductor of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra "Evgeny Svetlanov" in Moscow. Since 2003 he has been General Music Director of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra.
He is the uncle of the violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky .
