The Dipylidiidae (from Greek di "two" and pyle "gate", "opening") are a family of real tapeworms with a parasitic way of life. They mainly affect dogs and cats, most of their representatives can also occur in humans and are therefore zoonotic pathogens. Insects serve as intermediate hosts.
features
All representatives have a Scolex with four distinct suction cups. Each tapeworm segment has a sexual primordium with uterus , testicles and genital pore. The latter is double and arranged on the side, which gave the family its name. The ripe tapeworm limbs are longer than they are wide and resemble cucumber seeds, which has led to the common name cucumber core tapeworm for the species Dipylidium caninum .
