Dirck van Baburen (* 1595 in Utrecht ( Netherlands ); † 1624 also in Utrecht) was a Dutch painter of religious motifs, historical pieces and genre scenes . He was one of the followers of Caravaggio and is referred to as one of the Utrecht Caravaggists .

Life

After studying painting in Utrecht (together with Paulus Moreelse , a portrait and history painter ), he traveled to Rome in 1612 , where his style was strongly influenced by the work of the Italian painter Caravaggio , whose dramatic shades of light and dark he was particularly fascinating found.

His most important work in Italy is the altarpiece The Entombment of Christ in the Cappella della Pietà in the Church of San Pietro in Montorio in Rome (1615–1620). He carried out this assignment together with his friend and colleague David de Haen .

Returned to Utrecht in 1620, Baburen shared his studio with Hendrick ter Brugghen (1622–1623). Although he died in 1624, together with Honthorst and Ter Brugghen he established Utrecht's reputation as a stronghold of the Caravaggio style. The Utrecht artists adopted Caravaggio's shades of light and dark and his realism. Like Caravaggio, who often painted ordinary craftspeople, they preferred models with weathered faces and often portrayed them larger than they were.

meaning

Baburen was particularly fond of genre scenes (subjects from everyday life), as evidenced by his best-known work, The Coupler (1622; now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston ). This picture is seen as the model for two paintings by Vermeer 's, whose mother-in-law apparently owned it.

A certain rusticity of the presentation as well as an irregular composition instead of atmospheric quality distinguishes the art of Baburen from that of his better-known contemporaries. Even in his mythological and religious motifs, everyday perceptions served as models, as can be seen in the Prometheus painting - Baburen relocated the scene to a forge of his time.
