Paul Moreelse (1615/20)

Paulus Janszoon Moreelse (* 1571 in Utrecht ; † March 19, 1638 ibid) was a Dutch portrait and history painter of the Dutch Golden Age . His style was based on that of Caravaggio . His son was the painter Johan Moreelse .

Moreelse began his painting career as an apprentice to the Delft painter Michiel Janszoon van Miereveld . After a trip to Italy (1596) he returned to Utrecht and mainly painted portraits (1602) of contemporaries and colleagues as well as representatives of noble houses, such as B. the portrait of Duke Christian von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel or that of the Utrecht family van Voorst. He was instrumental in setting up the painters' guild "Sint Lucas" in his hometown, of which he was the first elected chairman. After 1620, he focused on religious and mythological subjects. In addition to his painting activities, he was also active politically (as a city councilor) and as an architect (designed, among other things, the then Katharinentor in Utrecht). He was also involved in founding the University of Utrecht in 1636 . His works were in great demand as collectibles at the time.
