The DirectGroup Bertelsmann GmbH was a division of Bertelsmann AG , which in 16 countries book clubs , music clubs, online shops , bookstores and publishers has operated. On June 30, 2011, DirectGroup Bertelsmann was dissolved as a separate division and the remaining club businesses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (as DirectGroup Germany), as well as Spain and Eastern Europe, continued under Bertelsmann Corporate Investments.

The company's turnover in 2009 was 1.25 billion euros. The Direct Group was formed in July 2000 and was most recently headed by Fernando Carro .

Corporate structure

The Direct Group had three regional organizations:

  • French-speaking countries (France, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland)
  • German-speaking countries, Iberia and Italy (Germany, Austria, Switzerland; Spain, Portugal; Italy)
  • English-speaking and Eastern European countries (New Zealand, Australia; Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Slovakia, Russia)

Further development steps:

  • BOL China was founded on December 19, 2000. The company offered its Chinese customers more than 160,000 different books as well as 3,000 audio / video products and 1,000 games / software products. BOL China was closed in 2008.
  • Club Bertelsmann , the German Bertelsmann book club , was founded in 1951 and had over 6 million members in its most successful times.
  • Wissen Media Verlag is a leading European lexicon publisher and has been part of Bertelsmann's Arvato division since July 1, 2008.
  • BOL is an online book delivery company in Germany that is now part of buch.de. The Direct Group holds a minority stake in Buch.de AG.
  • medienshop.de is an online shop for books, music and films.
  • Donauland is the book club in Austria.
  • France Loisirs has over 3,600 employees and over 5 million members in French-speaking countries.
  • Circulo de Lectores was founded in Spain in 1962.
  • Columbia House is the world's largest direct mail order company for DVD and music. The company was spun off from Direct Group in 2007 and sold to Najafi in 2008.
  • Bookspan operates over 45 book clubs in the US with over 8 million members and was spun off from Direct Group together with Columbia House in 2007 and sold to Najafi in 2008.
  • RobinBook.ch was founded in June 2008 and is one of the first DirectGroup Bertelsmann non-club bookstores in German-speaking countries.
  • viaSol Reisen , founded in 2008, is the travel provider of Direct Group Germany.
  • zeilenreich , founded in 2009, is an open book trade concept from Direct Group Germany - at three locations and on the Internet.
