from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dirk Druyf , also Dirck Druijf , Dirk Druijf or Dirck Druijf , (* around 1620, possibly in Leiden ; † around 1669 or later, possibly there) was a Dutch painter and draftsman of the so-called Golden Age .

Life

Little is known about Dirk Druyf's life, origins and education. According to a communication from Abraham Bredius , the artist declared to have been 28 on August 30, 1649 and 50 on August 8, 1669, so that he was probably born around 1620. On March 18, 1648 he is mentioned by name in the books of the St. Luke Guild in Leiden. In addition, he is undocumented and can only be verified as an independent artist on the basis of a few signed paintings and drawings.

Works

His earliest surviving work is the genre painting A Drinker at the Barrel , dated 1646 , which is now kept in the Muzeum Narodowe in Gdańsk (Danzig). A portrait of an old woman (signature: D.druijf fe. / 1.6.5.6 .; 74.5 × 60.7 cm) from 1656 has been preserved, which is currently in the private SØR Rusche collection in Oelde / Berlin . A miniature portrait of a young man from 1659 (signature: D. Druijf fe. 1659; 14 × 10.5 cm, oval; inv.no.A 2786) is in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam . Another picture, depicting a guitar player , was auctioned in London in 1990.

In addition to these paintings, only two drawings from 1655 are currently known that are in the possession of the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett : Portrait of Joos Jacobsz. Crommelin. (Signature: D. druyf f. 1655; 24.9 × 20.0 cm; inv.no.KdZ 30118) and portrait of Samuel Kechel. (Signature: D: druyf. F. 1655 .; 25.2 × 20.2 cm; Inv.-No. KdZ 30119) . These drawings show similarities to the portraits of the Haarlem draftsman and copper engraver Cornelis Visscher , whose work Druyf is most likely familiar with , both in terms of technique, as well as portrayal and material used .

In addition, two further pictures with depictions of summer and winter , in the inventory of Jean le Plas from 1651, are documented.
