“Here visitors come across strange signs! When visiting Dirk Hupe's studio in the back courtyard on Ückendorfer Straße, the visitor sees a lot of enigmatic writings on the wall like King Belshazzar once did with his biblical menetekel. Here as there, the signs of the times can hardly be deciphered and yet have a deep meaning: They open up language and color spaces. "

- Elisabeth Höving in WAZ September 23, 2017

Dirk Hupe's art is shaped by the preoccupation with writing, which runs through his entire work. The appearance and materiality of the letters are just as important as the content of what is written, which is sometimes barely recognizable without disappearing completely. His works include images, objects, installations and computer works that are shaped by the examination of the materiality of the writing and the written support and by the investigation of how meanings are preserved, fragmented or become mere traces through the displacements, refractions and alienations of the material .

The painterly gestures that can be found in early works have receded over the years in favor of the use of processed print and an emphasis on the different materials - paint, paper, glass, metal, silicone, etc. - themselves. The object-like nature of these works is pervaded by medial refractions, for example through the use of computer projections and copying processes in the manufacturing process. The technical dimension of the production of picture objects and other forms of representation, the preoccupation with art historical models and with literary and philosophical texts, of which only traces remain, and the subject of writing and its legibility are of equal importance.

His installations deal with the specific circumstances of the respective rooms (in addition to galleries and museums, churches, administrative buildings, etc.) and intervene in them, often using industrially produced materials.

In more recent works a return of the painterly and writing gesture can be observed, which leads to a new form of expression. It appears both as an independent form on canvas and in the form of overpainting.
