Dirk Stegmann

Dirk Stegmann (born April 12, 1941 in Hamburg ) is a German historian . Until his retirement he taught social and cultural history at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg .

Life

Stegmann studied Medieval and Modern History as well as German at the Universities of Freiburg and Hamburg and received his doctorate in 1969 with Fritz Fischer in Hamburg. He was also Fischer's last assistant from 1969 to 1972. From 1974 Stegmann was professor of history and its didactics at what was then the Lüneburg University of Education. The University of Lüneburg developed from the Lüneburg University of Education. Since 1986, Stegmann has been professor of social and cultural history. In 2006 he retired. His main research interests are the social and cultural history of Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries with a focus on the Empire and the Weimar Republic (see Turner-Stegmann controversy ) as well as the regional history of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein in the 20th century. Stegmann is a member of the Advisory Board for History in Society and Education in Schleswig-Holstein.
