Display PostScript

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Display PostScript is a restricted extension of the PostScript description language . In 1987, NeXT, in cooperation with Adobe, developed Display PostScript, a technology in which the screen is displayed with PostScript. This should achieve a better WYSIWYG , since the screen and print output are based on the same description language. The system was developed together with the Adobe company and later sold as an Adobe product.

In contrast to OpenGL , the characters are also “drawn”, which means that any (available) Type 1 fonts that are also used in the printing industry can be used.

PostScript is characterized by very good dimensional accuracy .

Display PostScript from NeXTStep , the operating system of the NeXTcube / NeXTstation , a computer developed by Steve Jobs ' NeXT, was used.

However, Display PostScript did not contain a window system, but was intended to operate in conjunction with an existing window system , for example X Window . In this form, Display PostScript was also used by companies such as Sun Microsystems , IBM and SGI on their workstations.

The operating system macOS of Apple uses with quartz a similar system for customizing the display, as opposed to Display PostScript PostScript is not used as a data source here, but the Portable Document Format used.
