history

The company was founded in 1903 by Johann Spanier as a grocery store . In the 1920s, this was supplemented by a first wholesaler, which was followed by others in 1960. After the Saarland came to Germany by referendum in 1957, the J. Spanier company became a member of the VIVO retail chain and later also of the IFA. In its largest expansion, the company supplied around 400 grocery stores in Saarland.

The Distributa group of companies was established in 1972 and in 1977 opened the first “do-it-yourself” specialist store under the name hela Baupark . In the next decade, hela Wohnexpress, -Autopark, -Gartenmeister and the first hela professional center were added. From 1986 the IX markets were replaced by the larger Accord markets. In January 2004 the seven hela hypermarkets were sold to Kaufland .

Gabriele Immetsberger, the founder's granddaughter, has been managing director together with Christoph Leinen since September 2006. They succeeded Werner Diehl, who had headed the company for more than thirty years.

Sale and withdrawal

In June 2007, the entire food division of Distributa, consisting of 29 modern Accord supermarkets located in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, a cash & carry location, a warehouse of over 7000 m² and the company headquarters in Saarlouis, were sold to the REWE Group . The grocery sales division recently achieved annual sales of over 150 million euros with almost 2,000 employees.

In July 2007 the 33 hela specialty stores of Distributa were sold to Globus SB-Warenhaus Holding . However, the purchase was linked to a number of conditions that were initially not met. This has Bundeskartellamt an unbundling process initiated. Globus SB-Warenhaus Holding was supposed to sell 4 of the 33 hela stores to an independent competitor. But this was disregarded, so that the Federal Cartel Office threatened to prohibit the entire purchase. Globus then tried to sue the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court and failed at the end of 2008. In mid-2010, the unbundling proceedings were discontinued because Globus sold the four stores in question to its competitor Obi . Since the sale of the food and specialty store divisions, the group is no longer operational as a trading company.
