history

Hypermarkets

In 1828 Franz Bruch (1801-1865) opened in today for Saarland belonging St. Wendel a grocery store for the citizens of the city. In 1865 he handed the management over to his son Joseph Adam Bruch (1837–1905). His grandson, Joseph Karl Bruch (1873–1949), expanded the company into a wholesaler from 1905 onwards. He supplied his customers - mainly grocers from Saarland - first with horse-drawn carriages and later with trucks. Joseph Bruch died on February 1, 1949. His two sons, Franz-Josef Bruch and Walter Bruch (1913–1999), took over the company , which has now been converted into a GmbH .

In the 1950s, the shopping behavior of consumers changed and self-service found its way into retail. Walter and Franz Josef Bruch then began restructuring the company. Globus developed into a cash + carry market. In 1953 they opened at the headquarters under the name “A. Backhaus KG “opened a self-service shop for groceries for the first time.

In the early 1960s they opened a wholesale pick-up market with a fruit and vegetable market there. The company continued to grow with the opening of a hypermarket in Homburg-Einöd in 1966. In 1969 the two existing stores were renamed to Globus. Since then, "Globus Handelshof St. Wendel GmbH & Co. KG", founded in 1970, has developed into the ninth largest food company in Germany with other hypermarkets. “Franz Bruch GmbH” ceased trading in March 1972 and became a limited partner of Globus. On March 1, 1980, Walter Bruch handed over his shares to his son Thomas. In 1992 the first Globus hypermarket opened in Isserstedt (today a district of Jena ) in the new federal states. In 1996 the company expanded to the Czech Republic with its first hypermarket , and on December 1, 2006 the first hypermarket was opened in Russia.

In 2006 Thomas Bruch signed a lease for a number of hypermarkets with the founder of the massa stores, Karl-Heinz Kipp . The previous tenant is Real , with whom Globus agreed to gradually take over the 13 stores. In 2008 the retail company took over two Real stores in Kaiserslautern and Bobenheim-Roxheim . 2011 was followed by surveys Hockenheim and Hattersheim , 2012 Wiesbaden -Nordenstadt and Stockstadt am Main , 2013 Main Valley and Limburg an der Lahn , and in 2016 Rüsselsheim - Bauschheim .

From 2011 to 2017 there was another business area called Globus Drive : online ordering of goods that are already packed and picked up from a warehouse. In addition, there was a small-scale supermarket Fridel Markt & Restaurant in Saarbrücken from 2015 to 2019 .

In January 2013, the company took 22nd place in the ranking of the 500 largest family businesses in the Wirtschaftsblatt magazine .

On July 1, 2020, Thomas Bruch handed over the management of Globus Holding to his son Matthias Bruch.

Specialist stores

Globus hardware stores and Hela-Profi centers

The first DIY department was opened in 1969 in the Globus hypermarket in Saarbrücken . In 1982 Erich Huwer initiated the first Globus DIY store in Gensingen - this store was still affiliated with a hypermarket - and subsequently built up the company's independent DIY store. Huwer remained in a managing position for Globus specialist stores until 2019. Independent hardware stores followed in 1986 in Zweibrücken and in 1988 in Regensburg . In 1990, with the opening of a hardware store in Ilmenau, the expansion into eastern Germany began. In 1987 the activities were combined in Globus Baumarkt Holding GmbH & Co. KG, and today's Globus Fachmärkte GmbH & Co. KG has existed since 2003 .

In July 2007, the Globus specialist stores acquired 33 Hela large-area DIY stores from the Distributa Group, 31 of them in Germany and two in Luxembourg. The merger was approved by the Federal Cartel Office with the condition that four Hela or Globus hardware stores be sold, one each in the Merzig-Wadern , St. Wendel , Saarpfalz- Zweibrücken and Idar-Oberstein areas . In September 2007 a second Hela-Profi center opened in Luxembourg. The Hela stores in Idar-Oberstein, Neunkirchen / Saar , Schmelz and St. Ingbert were sold to Obi on July 1, 2010 . In December 2013, the Globus specialist stores announced the takeover of eleven locations ( Göttingen , Salzgitter , Wolfsburg , Braunschweig , Oststeinbek , Magdeburg , Oldenburg , Dessau , Lippstadt , Marl and Unna ) from the insolvent hardware store chain Max Bahr .

The own food brands Jeden Tag , Globus and Globus-Gold (premium brand, predominantly fruit / vegetables) as well as the non-food own brands correctly , Natuvell ( drugstore items ) and GRANDIUS (leather goods) are sold. The German hypermarkets of the group are supplied daily with all items in the range by the subsidiary Globus Logistik GmbH & Co. KG , based in Bingen- Kempten and Löbichau .

In addition, there are in-house butcheries and bakeries in the self-service department stores, in some cases also catering areas, petrol stations, car and tire centers and, since 2013, sushi bars at some locations.

Specialist stores

There are currently 91 Globus hardware stores and Hela-Profi centers, 89 of them in Germany and two in Luxembourg , with a total of 9,100 employees. The administration is located in Völklingen .

The company's own brands include Primaster (in the building materials, paint, garden, and tool sectors) and Trend Line . At some locations there are master car workshops and a catering area ( Trefferia ), and the company also offers energy advice from certified energy consultants.

Globus specialist stores are the only do-it-yourself retailers in Germany to be certified with ISO standard 45001 for occupational health and safety management as well as ISO standard 14001 for environmental management and ISO standard 50001 for energy management.

Furthermore, Globus specialty stores currently include six Alphatecc. Consumer electronics stores with more than 20,000 products in their range.

Employee relationships

Globus has offered its employees the opportunity to participate in the company's economic development since 1990. Around half of the employees in Germany are silent partners in the company. The company differentiates between two participation models: “Plus 1000” allows employees to participate in their own location, and “Plus 2000” allows them to participate in the entire company.

In 2011, several employees who had carried Verdi buttons with a coffin depicted on them during working hours to protest against Hela's withdrawal from the industry collective agreement were released from work without continued pay. The Saarbrücken labor court found the employer right in one case. After that, the five locked Hela employees were initially not allowed to return to their workplaces. The employees invoked, among other things, freedom of expression and the fundamental rights of workers.

In March 2013, the Globus hypermarkets announced that they wanted to withdraw from the collective bargaining agreement for the retail trade in order to introduce their own Globus-specific tariff structures in the future. For the previous employees, however, one should grandfathering apply. While the union ver.di accused Globus of carrying out the price war in the food retail sector on the back of its employees, Globus named the collective agreements for the retail sector, which are more than 70 years old and no longer correspond to today's working world, as the main reason for the exit. In the meantime, Globus employed more than 1000 people in the group's own temporary employment agency Globus Personal Service GmbH based in Bingen. In the meantime this company has been dissolved and all employees have been employed directly in the factories.

Foundation, endowment

In 2005, the managing partner of Globus Holding, Thomas Bruch, founded the non-profit Globus Foundation in order to bundle the social activities of the Globus Group and make them more efficient and targeted. Today the Globus Foundation supports projects in Germany as well as in the poorest countries in the world. In Germany, the focus of funding activities is on supporting initiatives for disadvantaged young people to integrate them into working life. Abroad, the foundation supports projects for medical care for the population as well as educational projects for children and young people.

In addition, the Globus Foundation provided emergency aid in the event of natural disasters in Haiti , Pakistan , the Philippines and Germany.

Research cooperation

In 2007 the Innovative Retail Laboratory (IRL), a research laboratory of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), was set up at the headquarters of Globus SB-Warenhaus Holding in St. Wendel. The connection between scientists and the globe should enable projects to focus on the requirements and potential of future hypermarkets. Some of the techniques developed in the IRL have meanwhile been implemented in the Globus stores in Koblenz and Rüsselsheim, such as an article finder that shows the quickest route to the desired product. The IRL has been located in the Globus hypermarket in St. Wendel since 2019.
