Dorota Masłowska (born July 3, 1983 in Wejherowo , Poland ) is a Polish writer .

life and work

Masłowska grew up in Wejherowo and began studying psychology at the University of Gdansk after graduating from high school , but soon moved to Warsaw to study cultural studies. In the meantime she lived in Krakow , but then returned to Warsaw, whose Praga district she describes in her second book. Their first child was born in September 2004.

She wrote her debut novel Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną (2002) at the age of 18 during her senior year at the Liceum . The novel (literally: Polish-Russian war under a white and red banner) has been translated into the most important European languages. He describes - or caricatures - the everyday life and the lack of prospects of young people in post-communist Poland. Critics particularly praised the narrative style, enriched with plenty of youthful slang . A review in the daily newspaper compared it to Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting or JD Salinger's Der Fänger im Roggen . However, the book also aroused critical voices.

In 2005 Masłowska published her second book Paw królowej, with which she split the criticism. The title is a play on words - it can mean “The Queen's Peacock”, but also “The Queen's Puke”. The German translation was published in June 2007 under the title Die Reiherkönigin. The author was accused of foaming with cynicism, irritating about her ugliness and stupidity and only evoking dislike with her aggressive language and the absence of any narrative stringency ( Wprost ), but limited that the new book was no worse than the first. It is as poisonous as it is desperate ( Tygodnik Powszechny ). Paw Królowej is written in verse like a hip-hop song. In it, the author dissects and satirizes contemporary Polish. Similar to his predecessor, Paw królowej paints a gloomy picture of today's Poland.

In 2006 Masłowska published her first play, Dwoje biednych Rumunów mówiących po polsku (German: Two poor, Polish-speaking Romanians), which was presented at a staged reading in the Warsaw theater "TR Warszawa". Her latest piece is Między nami dobrze jest (We get along well), a commissioned work for TR Warszawa and the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz . It was performed for the first time in 2009 at the “International Festival of Authors on Identity and History” in Berlin.

Masłowska wrote columns for Przekrój magazine , published under the title Dziennik z krainy pazłotka , as well as literary reviews for a supplement to Gazeta Wyborcza , the Wysokie Obcasy (High Heels).

Influences

Agnieszka Drotkiewicz and Mirosław Nahacz , for example, were influenced by Dorota Masłowska .
