Diurnea lipsiella is a small butterfly from the broad-winged mothfamily(Chimabachidae).

features

The wingspan is 23 mm for the males and 17 mm for the females. In contrast to the male, the females have shortened wings (brachypter) and are therefore unable to fly. The male butterflies are slender. The fore wings are ocher brown in the basic color. A narrow, light stripe runs along the leading edge of the wing. Another light vertical stripe runs centrally. A larger area on the wing tip is colored dark. The hind wings are gray.

distribution

Diurnea lipsiella is common in large parts of Europe. The species is also found in the British Isles.

Way of life

Diurnea lipsiella makes one generation per year. The male moths fly from October to December. They are diurnal, but still fly at dusk and are attracted by light sources. You can find the butterflies in deciduous and mixed forests as well as on shrubs. The caterpillars feed on oak ( Quercus ) in particular , but also on blueberries ( Vaccinium ) and on rose plants of the Rubus and Prunus genera . The caterpillars usually stay between two interwoven leaves on which they feed. The pupation takes place under leaves on the ground.
