Dmitri Jurjewitsch Cholodow ( Russian Дмитрий Юрьевич Холодов , also Dimitry Kholodov ; born July 21, 1967 in Sagorsk , † October 17, 1994 in Moscow ) was a journalist for the Russian newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets . He was murdered while investigating corruption within the Russian army leadership.

Life

He was born the son of the physicist Yuri Cholodow and his wife Zoya. He studied physics and initially worked like his parents at the Defense Industry Institute in Klimovsk , south of Moscow. Because of poor career prospects, he turned to journalism. Initially he worked for local radio. In 1992 he became editor of the Moscow daily newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets .

In his articles, Cholodov alleged that Defense Minister Pavel Grachev was involved in corruption deals during the withdrawal of the Russian army from East Germany. In 1993 he reported in detail on ethnic cleansing in Abkhazia , including the 1993 Sukhumi massacre .

Cholodov died on October 17, 1994 when a prepared suitcase exploded in his editorial office, which he had got from a locker at the Kazan train station in Moscow. His colleague Katja Dejewa was injured by the suitcase bomb. Cholodov had suspected the suitcase contained documents that would incriminate the Ministry of Defense.

Although the journalist's death was tried in two military courts, there were no convictions. The prosecution had charged five army intelligence officers with murder and one other intelligence officer of complicity. According to the prosecutors, they were acting on behalf of the then Russian Defense Minister Grachev. Grachev had appeared as a witness in court and had admitted to having told employees about Cholodov, "break his legs" and "close his mouth". However, the defendants were acquitted in 2004 for lack of evidence. An appeal was rejected in 2005.
