Dmitry Gulia ( Abkhaz Дырмит Иасыф-иҧа Гәлиа ; Russian Дмитрий Иосифович Гулиа * February 9 . Jul / 21st February  1874 greg. In Tschartscha , Russian empire ; † 7. April 1960 in Agudsera , Abkhazian ASSR ) was a Soviet - Abkhazian writer and poet. Today he is one of the founders of modern Abkhazian literature.

life and career

Dmitri Gulia was born as Gatch Gulia in the Abkhazian Tschartscha near Gulrypsch , at that time still part of the Russian Empire . His family was initially deported to the Ottoman Empire , like many Abkhaz families after the Russian conquest of the Caucasus . However, Gulia's father managed to return to Abkhazia. Gulia herself did a teacher training in Gori .

Together with Konstantin Matschawariani, he developed a new Abkhaz alphabet based on the Cyrillic alphabet in 1892 . In 1912 Gulia published a first volume of poetry. In 1919 he wrote the first novella in the Abkhazian language, “Under a Foreign Sky”. In the 1920s, when Abkhazia was now part of the Soviet Union , he was one of the editors of the magazine Apsny , the first Abkhaz-language newspaper. From 1922 to 1924 he taught the Abkhazian language at the State University of Tbilisi . In the following years Gulia was very active as a writer, followed by lyrical works such as “Song of Abkhazia” (1940) or “Autumn in the Village” (1946) and the novella “Kamachich” (1940). He has also authored non-fiction books on the Abkhaz language, culture and history.

In the 1950s, Gulia sat in the Supreme Soviet of the USSR , the Parliament of the Soviet Union. Gulia was also awarded the Order of Lenin . He died in 1960. His son Georgi Gulia was also a writer.
