The Dock C , generally also pressure dock called, was a floating dock with pressure chamber in the Naval Arsenal Arsenal operating Kiel .

history

Dock C was built in 1967 by Flender-Werke Lübeck to simulate diving depths in submarine development and testing . Previously, submarines were generally tested on the high seas, which was generally associated with a high logistical and financial effort, and in the event of an accident or damage with correspondingly high risks. In Dock C, the crew and test personnel were able to stay on board the submarine to be tested and react more directly to the course of the test. In addition to the cost advantage, the results of print tests could also be evaluated more quickly and more directly with the Dock C, which meant a significant time saving. The simulable diving depth was so great that in 1970 U3 could be loaded until it was destroyed.

A pressure dock of this kind was unique in the western world, so that Dock C was also used by NATO partner countries. No information is available about a comparable facility in the former Eastern Bloc , so it can be assumed that the print dock was unique in the world.

The 1000th docking took place on August 17, 2009.

The last submarine that was docked in the pressure dock was the Norwegian Utstein , which was checked for leaks in the dock by March 18, 2011. With the retirement of the last four submarines of the class 206A in March 2011, the last intended use of the German Navy broke off because it was too small for the new submarine class 212 . With the sale of two of these submarines to Colombia in August 2012 and the use of the remaining two submarines as a spare part donor for Colombia, Dock C was also separated in August 2012 after more than 1000 dockings and shipped to Turkey for € 1.35 million sold for scrapping. On August 15, 2011, the Greek tug Pantodynamos cast off at the naval arsenal in Kiel and brought it to Aliaga, where it was scrapped.
