Another four issues followed in the early 1980s. Western Publishing was bought by Mattel in 1982 and comics ceased to be published in 1984.

Valiant Comics

Under the leadership of former Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter , Valiant Comics was created as a brand by Voyager Communications Inc. and licensed some characters from Western Publishing. Under the title Solar - Man of the Atom , new stories were published in the early 1990s, which together with Valiant's own titles such as Harbinger , XO Manowar and Shadowman , contributed to a complex comic universe. These series also appeared outside the United States, but not in Germany.

From September 1991 to April 1996 the booklets "Solar Man of the Atom" 1 to 60 were published.

In April 1995 "The Original Doctor Solar - Man of the Atom" was released. This booklet contains two stories from the classic Gold Key series; namely from No. 1 and No. 5.

Has also Solar another guest appearances in other Valiant titles.

Literally a split-off title was "The Destroyer". Solar had split into a story and one of the two became the "Destroyer". There was only one issue with this title.

In 1994 two graphic novels with the character Solar Man of the Atom were published by Valiant:

"Alpha & Omega" was published in April 1994 and contains the middle stories from issues 1 to 10, which describe the (new) beginning of Dr. Solar show. The author is Jim Shooter, the preliminary pencil drawings are by Barry Windsor-Smith , which were inked by Bob Layton and colored by Janet Jackson.

"Second Death" was published in March 1994 and contains the main story of issues 1 to 4, which, however, takes place after "Alpha & Omega". Jim Shooter also wrote this story, pencil draftsman was D. David Perlin, Bob Layton provided these drawings with ink and colored them by Kathryn Bolinger.

Acclaim Comics

In 1994 Voyager Communications Inc. was sold to the game manufacturer Acclaim, which initially left Valiant's business operations untouched. After an industry-wide slump in circulation figures, Acclaim restructured the Valiant comic universe. Acclaim Comics now had the primary task of serving the group's video games as an advertising platform. As Acclaim Comics Valiant Heroes II , some new titles were published from 1996 to 2002, some of which were greatly changed, including Solar - Man of the Atom with a total of six issues. Acclaim went bankrupt in 2004, the rights to the Valiant / Acclaim-owned characters were sold the following year. Solar, however, fell back to Random House, the holder of the Western publishing licenses.
