Docusnap is software for automated network inventory , IT documentation , license management and rights analysis .

The software enables, for example, the listing of the IT systems used and the precise determination of the software versions used . With Docusnap, the user can either use wizards or, alternatively, a service to make an inventory of components in a computer network . A Windows user interface enables manual addition, analysis and visualization of the recorded data. The inventory data is exclusively in a Microsoft SQL server - database stored.

Technology overview

The main features of the software are:

The inventory of network components is carried out agentless using standard protocols. The following technologies are used:

target technology
Windows WMI
BSD , macOS ; Linux SSH
VMware VMware API
SNMP-enabled devices SNMP
MS Exchange environment Windows PowerShell
Active Directory LDAP
Microsoft SQL Server TSQL
File system CIFS , SMB

The online status is checked via ICMP . The automatically recorded data can be supplemented with manual details or information. In addition to the inventory methods over the network, a script-based method is also available that prepares an XML file with the inventoried data.

history

In 2004, itelio GmbH developed Docusnap 1.0, a documentation software that was able to document Windows systems on the basis of Microsoft Office products. In 2005, Version 2.0 was followed by a database-supported solution with a specially developed information explorer. Version 3.0 in late 2005 was the able next Windows systems Active Directory from Microsoft to document. The sub-versions 3.1 and 3.2 in 2006 expanded the range of functions to include the documentation of Microsoft SQL servers and the rights analysis.

In 2007 a new surface design was presented with version 4.0. This version also made it possible to document Microsoft DHCP servers, Microsoft Exchange servers and Linux . Version 4.1, released in early 2008, expanded the range of functions to include license management .

The completely newly developed version 5.0 presented at the end of 2009 has a user interface based on Microsoft Office 2007 and also supports the documentation of VMware environments and Macintosh systems. In addition, Docusnap 5.0 was equipped with its own report generator and expanded with a customizing module . Version 5.1, which was released on September 1, 2010, is based on the layout of Microsoft Office 2010. In addition, this version offers the option of displaying ITIL relationships.

Version 6.0 was presented to the public in February 2012. In addition to further modules for inventory (Microsoft SharePoint , Microsoft Hyper-V and Microsoft Internet Information Services ), the authorization analysis has been expanded to include a graphical representation and the analysis of Microsoft SharePoint authorizations. The inventory of SNMP systems has been expanded (SNMPv3) and offers a graphical representation of the network topology. Dashboards were integrated within the various areas to support the processes. Within Docusnap there is the possibility to create IT concepts and to link them with the data from the Docusnap CMDB . If the data changes, the IT concepts are adjusted automatically.

Version 6.1 was released on March 3rd at CeBIT . A module for inventorying Xen and an open data interface DocusnapConnect were presented as innovations . The authorization analysis has been expanded to include the analysis of Microsoft Exchange servers. The IT concepts area has been completely revised in terms of usability.

With version 6.2 a 64-bit version has been introduced for the first time . Functional enhancements were made to support Symantec Backup Exec, Oracle databases and documentation of DFS logs . The visualization options have been expanded to include the display of VLAN configurations. Data analysis has been greatly simplified with the introduction of IT dependencies.

With version 6.3 the inventory of the data backup solution Veeam was taken. The license management has been expanded and improved in its functionalities. Since the introduction of version 6.3, Docusnap has also been available as a non-commercial edition for small computer networks.

In version X, the Docusnap Discovery Service was integrated, which enables the complete recording of further locations via internal VPN connections or the Internet and thus a decentralized inventory. The newly introduced Docusnap web client enables mobile access to the database. Connections and dependencies between business processes, IT services and the required IT systems can be mapped clearly and transparently with Docusnap X. Business-critical constellations can be specifically identified and corrected. In addition, with Docusnap X it is now possible to fully display the physical infrastructure such as racks or cabling. In addition, communication paths and data connections can be recognized and mapped in detail using Docusnap X.
