Docutainment

Docutainment ( suitcase word from document mentation and enter tainment ) denotes an entertaining presentation of documentary material.

Similar to infotainment , from which the term was split off, docutainment is also a combination of documentary and pure entertainment. Facts and background knowledge are prepared in an exciting and entertaining way for a mass audience, whereby the quality of the information and the truthfulness are neglected. Broadcast formats such as docutainment, docu-soaps , reality TV or scripted reality are criticized because of the “blurring of the contrast between fiction and 'reality'”.

Prominent examples of docutainment are the films by Michael Moore , but also documentary films such as Rhythm Is It! . Examples on German-language television are series prepared for entertainment about professional groups such as zoo keepers, veterinarians or police officers ( on patrol ) based on the model of the American series COPS . Often work and family are the focus, both in everyday life and in exceptional situations. Guido Knopp's historical documentaries are also subsumed under this by several critical authors .

The German Television Prize was awarded annually from 2010 to 2014 in the docutainment section . In 2014 he went to the show Shopping Queen . The Factual Entertainment division has been called since 2016 .
