Doe Avedon also Doe Avedon Siegel (* 7. April 1925 in Old Westbury , New York as Dorcas Marie Nowell ; † 18th December 2011 in Encino , California ) was a model and an American actress in film and television. She played various roles in the cinema in the 1940s and 1950s. Including in films like Day and Day or Deep in My Heart .

life and career

Doe Avedon was born Dorcas Marie Nowell in 1925 in Old Westbury, New York, the daughter of a butler. Her mother died when she was three years old. She was then raised by her father until she was 12 and, after his death, by the family of his employer, a wealthy lawyer. As a young woman, she later worked in New York in various jobs, including as a bank clerk. In 1944 she married the photographer Richard Avedon, who was two years her senior . Avedon, who worked as a photographer for fashion magazines such as Harper's Bazaar , paved the way for his wife as a top model. In 1949 Doe Avedon began her film career with a small supporting role in Fletcher Markle's crime film Jigsaw . In 1954 she was cast by the director William A. Wellman in his drama It's Always Day in the role of the stewardess Miss Spalding. In the same year she played in Stanley Donen's musical Deep in My Heart at the side of José Ferrer , Merle Oberon and Helen Traubel . In 1984 she was seen in her last film role in John Cassavete's drama Love Streams .

Doe Avedon had already turned to television as early as 1949 and starred in episodes of successful series there. Her appearances in the new medium included The Philco Television Playhouse (1949), The Public Defender (1954), Matinee Theater (1956), Alcoa Theater (1958) and Climax! (1958). She played a more complex TV role as Diane Walker from 1955 to 1956 in 9 episodes of the television series Big Town .

Doe Avedon was married three times, to the photographer Richard Avedon (1944–1949), to Don Mathews (1949–1953) and to the director Don Siegel (1957–1975). With Siegel they had four children together. Doe Avedon died on December 18, 2011 at the age of 86 in Encino, California.
