Dolbogene hartwegii is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of moth (Sphingidae). It is the only species in the Dolbogene genus .

features

The relatively small moths have a fore wing length of 22 to 26 millimeters. They have a diffuse brown, gray and white wing pattern. On the front wings there is a dark discal spot with a white core, in the anal angle there is another, smaller, dark spot. The hind wings are predominantly gray and have a pale, whitish postmedial band and a dark eye-spot in the anal corner. The undersides of both pairs of wings are light gray, with well-defined dark post-medial lines. On both sides of the back of the abdomen, dark longitudinal lines run from the thorax to the tip of the abdomen. The thorax is significantly darker than the abdomen. The species differs from the very similar, somewhat larger Ceratomia igualana in that it has somewhat brown and more patterned forewings. Ceratomia igualana lacks the two spots on the anal angles of the wings, and in this species the post-medial lines on the underside of the two pairs of wings are not formed.

Occurrence and way of life

Only a few specimens of the species have been caught so far, so nothing is known about their way of life. It is believed that the animals are crepuscular and are attracted by artificial light. Occurrences are proven from the south of Arizona as well as from Mexico.
