Alfred Ströer

Alfred Ströer (born December 3, 1920 in Vienna ; † August 20, 2011 ibid) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and union secretary . From 1966 to 1972 he was a member of the National Council .

Life

After finishing elementary and secondary school, Ströer attended vocational school and learned the trade of toolmaker.

In 1939 he was arrested after a leaflet campaign against the National Socialist rulers and imprisoned first in the police prison as a Gestapo prisoner until 1941 , then in the Vienna Regional Court and in the Wiener Neustadt District Court . He was finally convicted of "preparing to commit high treason", which deprived him of his "military worthiness", and in 1942 he was drafted into the 999 Penal Division . Most recently he was stationed on the Greek island of Rhodes , where he was taken prisoner at the end of the Second World War and remained in Egypt until December 1946.

Back in Austria, he joined the Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB) on January 1, 1947 , where he was responsible for youth work from 1956 to 1959 and was then senior secretary and a close collaborator of ÖGB President Franz Olah . Under his successor Anton Benya he became finance secretary. As a union official, he also became a board member of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions . In addition, he passed the external Matura and studied political science .

Within the party he was active as district party chairman of the SPÖ von Purkersdorf . He was also a member of the College of the Vienna City School Council , represented the SPÖ between March 30, 1966 and October 4, 1972 in the National Council and was a member of the SPÖ party executive. After leaving the National Council, he was Chairman of the Board of Management until 1981 and then Chairman of the Supervisory Board of BAWAG until 1987 .

In 1977 Ströer was awarded the Badge of Honor for Services to the Liberation of Austria .

In retirement he remained active on a voluntary basis, was Vice President of the Documentation Archive of the Austrian Resistance (DÖW) and of the Association for the History of the Labor Movement , member of the Board of Trustees of the Mauthausen-Aktiv-Austria Association and the Board of Trustees of CARE- Austria, Managing Director of the Bruno-Kreisky- Foundation for the Promotion of Human Rights and from 1995 to 2007 Chairman of the Association of Social Democratic Freedom Fighters and Victim of Fascism , of which he remained Honorary Chairman until his death. In 2003 he was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit of the State of Salzburg. Ströer was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery.
