Of the existing detention places, 16 are used for relaxed enforcement for outdoor prisoners and 82 places in residential group enforcement . In addition to the prisoners from the Wiener Neustadt, Neunkirchen, Baden and Mödling districts, female prisoners from Burgenland are also accommodated in the prison, as the Eisenstadt prison did not have a women's section until 2016.

history

In 1877, the administration of justice at that time bought a building site of around 2 hectares. The construction of the district court building and the associated prison took place from 1890 to 1893 according to the plans of the Imperial and Royal Ministerial Councilor and Building Councilor Wilhelm Röllig . About 70% of the property area fell to the prison at that time. The institution itself was built at a price of 540,000 guilders for 150 prisoners and opened on October 26, 1893. The building was refurbished and structurally improved for the first time in 1920. In the same year electrical lighting was introduced , and eight years later central heating was introduced in the detention building.

During the Second World War , Wiener Neustadt was practically reduced to ashes by American and British bombers, particularly in the last months of the war. The prison building was also badly damaged in the air raids and had to be rebuilt between 1948 and 1950. In the course of this, hot water preparation and an alarm system were installed for the first time . Numerous structural improvements were made in the 1950s and 1960s, and in 1970 an extension with a workshop hall was built to employ the prisoners. In the years 1974 to 1980 the building was completely refurbished again and in the course of this a toilet system was installed in all cells. In 1980, a further extension of the office wing with the officials' kitchen and dining room was opened and in 1987 the new building of the asylum chapel was inaugurated.

In 2000, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labor announced an architectural competition for the renovation and expansion of the prison. The groundbreaking ceremony began on November 12, 2002 and was completed at the end of 2006. The entire renovation cost the Federal Real Estate Company around 14.1 million euros net. This makes the Wiener Neustadt Prison one of the most modern Austrian prisons.
