The Justice Center Leoben is a court and prison complex at Dr.-Hanns-Groß-Straße 7 in Leoben in Styria . In addition to the Regional Court Leoben and this is the district court , the court-house jail and the prosecutor's office housed.

Building history

In 1998 the construction of a new "justice center" in Leoben was included in the federal construction program. In this new building on Dr.-Hanns-Groß-Straße, the Leoben Regional Court, the Leoben Public Prosecutor , the Leoben District Court and the Leoben Prison were to be brought together. The architectural competition was announced in the summer of 1999, and on April 26, 2000 the winning model by the architect Josef Hohensinn from Graz was presented to the public. On December 14, 2000 the draft was finally approved. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 5, 2002, and excavation began in January 2003. The topping- out ceremony took place on January 29, 2004.

After a construction period of 22 months, the presidium and the civil law departments of the regional court as well as all areas of the district court started work in the new office building on December 20, 2004. The judicial center was officially opened on March 11, 2005 by Minister of Justice Karin Gastinger , whereby the construction costs were estimated at € 46 million, of which € 21.7 million went to the actual courthouse. The regional and district courts of Leoben were relocated from the official building at Erzherzog-Johann-Straße 3 to the justice center, while the Leoben penal institution was moved from the Dominikanergasse building complex .

description

The buildings meet modern architectural requirements. In 2004, the architect Josef Hohensinn was awarded the Styrian State Architecture Prize for planning the justice center. The Justice Center is regarded as a European flagship project in the judiciary and prison sector. Nevertheless, the attached penal institution is controversial due to the modern management of the institution. The prison was advertised on a Georgian website as a holiday destination , as a comparison with Georgian conditions could almost make you think of paradisiacal conditions. In addition, the Leoben prison was also the first prison in Austria to set up a long-term visitor room, popularly known as a "cuddle cell" , which caused additional resentment among the population.

The prison section of the building was created for the execution of pre- trial detention and criminal detention up to a total of 18 months. With 205 prisoners , the prison is completely occupied. A relaxed sentence is possible for 15 inmates in one of the four residential groups . Outside the actual prison there is the so-called open-air hall with a flooring capacity for up to 30 people.
