The Eisenstadt prison is a judicial prison that is attached to the regional court in the statutory city of Eisenstadt . The prison is the only penal institution in Burgenland .

On August 30, 2007, there were 155 prisoners for 163 planned detention places, which corresponded to a total occupancy rate of 95.09%. Compared to the rest of Austria, the prison's capacity utilization was roughly average. The existing detention places are to house detainees used for the execution of sentences of imprisonment not exceeding 18 months as well as the enforcement of financial penalties sticking.

The institution was put into operation in 1968 as the first newly built prison in Austria after the Second World War. From 1972 onwards, only male prisoners were housed in the prison, which changed again with the completion of the new justice center in 2016.

This renovation was carried out from 2010 on behalf of the Federal Real Estate Company as part of a fundamental renovation and new construction of the Eisenstadt justice center, which includes the judicial institution as well as the regional court and the public prosecutor's office. After the premises of the regional court and the public prosecutor's office were handed over to their intended use in August 2013, work was then carried out on the reconstruction of the prison wing while operations continued. This conversion was finally completed in June 2016 after a six-year construction period and ensured that the institution now meets all the requirements of a modern penal system. The existing six and four-bed cells will be completely replaced by single and twin cells. In addition, with the renovation, a separate women's department was created again, so that since 2016 female prisoners on remand and convicts can be accommodated again in Burgenland.
