Korneuburg Justice Center
The Korneuburg Justice Center is a court and prison complex in the Lower Austrian town of Korneuburg . Since 2012, there are two buildings, which are connected underground by a corridor, on the one hand the district and regional court with the associated public prosecutor's office , on the other hand the Korneuburg prison, a judicial prison .
Courthouse
The part of the justice center in which the district and regional court as well as the Korneuburg public prosecutor are housed is structurally separated from the prison part above ground and yet connected to it by an underground passage - for example for the purpose of court presentations.
Korneuburg Prison
The Korneuburg Prison is a judicial prison in terms of its law enforcement concept, which is attached to the Korneuburg Regional Court. In the JA Korneuburg, remand detainees and criminal detainees whose duration does not exceed 18 months are executed.
262 all male prisoners can be accommodated. As of August 30, 2007, 214 prisoners were incarcerated in the then still old Korneuburg prison, which at that time corresponded to a utilization rate of 93.13%. This made the prison one of the less busy penal institutions in Austria.
history
In 1852 a political restructuring of the administration in the Austrian Empire was decided. This reorganization made it necessary to create a district court in Korneuburg, in the course of which a detention center was to be attached. From 1856, the newly built buildings on a site made available by the city of Korneuburg could be moved into in stages. In the detention wing of the district court, 52 cells and two sick cells were available for the execution of sentences. In 1973 the prison was expanded by two floors and seven floors. A renovation of the building was completed in the middle of the 80s, in 1993 it was expanded again and in 1997 a new visitor wing was opened.
In order to realize efforts to relocate the entire structure of the district court and prison out of the center of the city, a new building was planned on the “Pöll grounds” just outside the city center. The ground-breaking ceremony for the project took place on September 21, 2009. After a three-year construction phase, the Federal Real Estate Company , which had acted as a developer on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Justice and is now renting the building to the latter, was finally able to hand over the new justice center to its intended use in 2012 . A total of 77 million euros were invested in the construction.
On January 13, 2015, the newly built Korneuburg Justice Center was awarded the State Prize for Architecture and Sustainability 2014.
