The Linz Prison is a regional court prison in the Upper Austrian capital Linz . Organizationally, the prison belongs to the Linz Regional Court .

The prison on Pochestraße in Linz can accommodate 224 prisoners. On August 30, 2007, the 373 total detention places (including the now independent Asten branch ) were occupied by 365 detainees. This corresponds to a capacity utilization of 97.86%. The bonding areas for the detention of male and female were designed investigation prisoners from the court Sprengel the Landesgericht Linz and female prisoner detention of the district court Steyr (in the branch Steyr the Justizanstalt Garsten exclusively male prisoners are received). Furthermore, prison sentences of up to a duration of 18 months, substitute prison sentences for administrative offenses and financial offenders can be carried out in the Linz Prison. The institution was built between 1861 and 1864 as the most modern prison house of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

Former branch offices in Asten

In 1963, the former repatriate camp in the market town of Asten was bought and attached to the prison as a branch. From spring 2010, an organizationally independent branch office was run at the same location as the Forensic Center Asten , a center for forensic psychiatry in the penal system. Already treated, mentally abnormal lawbreakers who are not responsible are accommodated in the course of long-term rehabilitation. On January 1, 2019, the two branch offices were organizationally merged and converted into an independent prison, which is now called Prison Asten and is no longer organizationally part of the Linz Prison.
