The Sonnberg Prison is an Austrian penal institution in Sonnberg , a cadastral community of Hollabrunn in Lower Austria . Normally 350 prisoners can be admitted to the prison, but as of August 30, 2007, 352 people were imprisoned in Sonnberg, which corresponds to a total occupancy rate of 100.57%.

Conception

The prison is designed for the execution of criminal detention on male inmates whose total term of detention exceeds 18 months and is up to 10 years. According to a flexibility clause issued by the Federal Ministry of Justice , which defines the Sonnberg Prison as an organizational unit, in rare cases the prison also carries out measures on dangerous recidivists.

The Sonnberg Prison has now specialized in the execution of prison sentences on sex offenders . Particular attention is paid to offenders convicted of serious sexual abuse of minors or sexual abuse of minors (Sections 206 and 207 StGB ). In addition to a drug-free zone, there is also a detention center and a detention center located a little outside the prison grounds.

From July 2007 to May 2009, the first drug detection dog of the Austrian judicial guard was stationed at the Sonnberg prison . He could be deployed in every prison in Austria and was requested a total of 60 times during the period of his deployment by the end of 2008. The service dog was requested 117 times during the entire period. On June 1, 2009, the Ministry of Justice abandoned the project due to the high costs in the prison area. Addiction controls are now taking place again with the help of sniffer dogs from the security police.

history

The institution is located in a former moated castle from the late Renaissance, Sonnberg Castle , which was built in 1596 by the Barons von Gilleis to replace the former Sonnberg Castle. At the end of the Second World War, the castle was briefly used as a field hospital . It was not until 1955 that the judicial administration acquired the building from Archduke Anton von Habsburg and converted it into a modern prison facility in 1973. In 2005, the existing building complex was expanded by 90 prison places.
