History, castle and parish of Sonnberg

The name of the first owner appeared in 1066. It was the Vohburger Rapoto. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1177. At a depth of 8 meters, an underground passage led from the castle to the town square. This is said to still exist today, but details are not known. In 1231 Sonnberg was destroyed in the fight against Duke Friedrich II . After that, the owner of Sonnberg changed constantly. In 1377 Sonnberg came into the possession of the Eckartsauer. They were known to have a keeper at the castle. In 1497 the new owner was called Rohrer. In 1570 Sonnberg came into the possession of the Gilleis family. Wolf Georg von Gilleis had the outdated and destroyed castle rebuilt in another location, also in Sonnberg. Today nothing can be seen of the old castle.

Archduke Anton Salvator von Habsburg-Lothringen acquired the castle in 1934 and, as an enthusiastic private pilot, had a private airfield built. At the end of the Second World War, Sonnberg Castle was used as a military hospital for a time . In 1955 the castle was sold to the judicial administration and has been a modern penal institution since 1973 - the Sonnberg prison - which offers space for 350 prisoners.

From 1871 to 1949, the Nordwestbahn (Austria) had its own stop in Sonnberg . The Roman Catholic parish of Sonnberg was established before 1307. The parish ceased to exist in 1620 and was rebuilt in 1784 by Emperor Joseph II . Since then, the villages of Dietersdorf and Wolfsbrunn have also been part of the parish.
