history

In the spring of 2010, the Asten Forensic Center (FZA) was opened on the premises of the Asten branch of the Linz Prison . Before that, there was only one forensic psychiatry facility in Austria, the Göllersdorf prison in Lower Austria, which was operated directly by the Federal Ministry of Justice . Other mentally abnormal law breakers are also sometimes placed in closed psychiatric wards in regular hospitals. The Asten Forensic Center is designed for the long-term rehabilitation of patients with severe mental illnesses. Initially, the center had 91 beds, and in 2015 an extension was completed that increased the capacity of the forensic center to up to 153 patients. Since the premises of the forensic center were adapted in the summer of 2017, Asten has been able to accommodate both male and 14 female patients.

Up until the end of 2018, two branch offices of the Linz Prison were housed on the site in Asten: On the one hand, the Asten Forensic Center and, on the other, the Asten branch, which had already been established at the same location. On January 1, 2019, these two branch offices were organizationally merged and converted into an independent prison, which is now called Prison Asten and is no longer organizationally part of the Linz Prison. In 2019, the prison was intensified due to several incidents - including 28 criminal acts among inmates by mid-July this year alone, 16 against prison guards, one inmate of child pornography and 50 escapes from prison since 2012 Focus of the media as well as the Ministry of Justice. The General Directorate for Prison in the Ministry of Justice then provided its head of the security department as experts for the management team at Asten Prison.
