history

In the former Dominican monastery founded in 1280 in the center of the city of Leoben, the regional court of Leoben had its seat since 1850. In addition to the regional court, the district court of Leoben, the public prosecutor's office in Leoben and the prison were housed in the building complex until 1856. The district authority (until August 1932) and the regional gendarmerie command were also located here. In the period from 1933 bis 1938 in the courtyard of the time used by the District Court Leoben building complex were four executions on Würgegalgen completed, including after the February struggles that of the Social Democratic labor leader Koloman Wallisch . A memorial plaque at the east entrance of the LCS reminds of this. Until the move to the newly built Justice Center in Leoben , which was officially opened on March 11, 2005 , the Presidium and the criminal law departments of the Leoben Regional Court as well as the public prosecutor's office and the Leoben prison were housed in the Dominikanergasse office building.

The municipal council of the city of Leoben decided in 2005 against the votes of the KPÖ council members to develop the former Dominican monastery and surrounding areas in the city center into a shopping center. The Leoben City Shopping Errichtungs- und Betriebs GmbH was founded for the construction and operation , in which the Cobra Jean Handels-GmbH of the entrepreneur Jean-Erich Treu, the city of Leoben and Treu itself have a 60:30:10 stake. After extensive archaeological and historical preparatory work, the construction work, which cost around 70 million euros, began in May 2006. The entire listed monastery complex was renovated and integrated into the overall concept by architect Hans-Heinrich Brunner. With the integration of the late medieval mendicant monastery, a shopping center that is unique in Europe was created.

At the same time as the shopping center went into operation on October 3, 2007, the road traffic concept for downtown Leoben was changed.
