Dolichurus is a genus of digger wasps (Spheciformes) from the family Ampulicidae . It is spread all over the world. 34 species are known, three of which occur in Europe, two of them also in Central Europe.

features

The frontal plate ( clypeus ) of the animals towers over the antennae roots like a roof, which is why the representatives of the genus are easy to determine. As with the closely related genus Ampulex , the prothorax is stretched forward, but it is less long than the base is wide.

Way of life

The wasps are very nimble and are therefore in their behavior with wasps to be confused (Pompilidae). The females feed their brood with cockroaches of the Ectobiidae family . A single cockroach is introduced into an existing cavity. In contrast to the Ampulex genus , the anesthetic sting is not performed on the prothorax, but on any part of the extremities. Most of the time, the antennae of the prey are cut off, then they are grabbed by the antennae roots and pulled backwards into the cavity.
