Dolichurus corniculus is a Hymenoptera from the family of ampulicidae .

features

The wasp reaches a body length of 5.5 to 7 millimeters (females) or 6 to 8 millimeters (males). They have a black colored body, with a similar abdomen. The similar Dolichurus bicolor has a red colored first and second tergite . The fourth to seventh tergite in the males is mostly hidden under the third. Above the deflection of the sensor there is a facing plate.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in North Africa, Europe to just under the Arctic Circle and in Turkey. It colonizes dry, sandy forest edges and similar sandy habitats at favorable temperatures. It occurs up to an altitude of about 1750 meters above sea level. The animals fly from May to September, probably in one generation. The species occurs rarely to widespread.

Way of life

The adults feed on honeydew , which they lick up on aphids that live on oaks . The females make their nests in cavities in the ground that are not dug themselves. Presumably only one cell is created per cavity. The brood is supplied with forest cockroaches from the genera Ectobius and Phyllodromica . The prey is only lightly stunned. Before they are transported to the nest, almost two thirds of their antennae are bitten off. The larval development is completed after almost 14 days and pupation then takes place.
