The Dolmen of Bois Neuf III (called Bois Neuf C ) is located west of the hamlet Le Bois Neuf in Marsac near Guéret in the Creuse department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

It was excavated and restored in 1997. Seven out of ten bearing stones, the 2.9 × 2.0 m ceiling slab and remains of the cairn were preserved . It must not be confused with other dolmens in the vicinity (such as the dolmen of Quatre Routes and dolmens of Bois Neuf 1 and 2). The dolmen dates from the middle Neolithic (3500 to 2500 BC) At this time the Limousin was affected by the spread of the Chassey culture . Through the construction of fortifications and megalithic monuments, it shows the first traces of a social hierarchy. The monument is the sole survivor of a group of five.

Among the finds include pottery fragments of the Bronze Age , a knife, a polished ax of black flint, a endneolithischer dagger and arrowheads from flint , grinding stone fragments, a Hämatitkiesel (iron ore) with pendant in quartz and tourmaline .

Pits have been dug nearby, the inventory of which is as follows:

  • Pit 1: a polished 168 mm × 67 mm × 33 mm ax made from local flint and chips, fragments of rough red pottery. Charcoal dates from 2615 to 2462 BC. Chr.
  • Pit 2: fragment of a polished ax made of green stone
  • Pit 3: Chalcolithic (2500 to 1800 BC) sherds, charcoal (dating identical to that of pit no.1)

The three other pits appear to have contained posts.
