Dolmen of Centeilles

Notre-Dame de Centeilles

The remains of the north-south oriented dolmen of Centeilles are only a few meters south of the Notre-Dame de Centeilles chapel on a pre-Christian site, about three kilometers north and above the round village of Siran , near Carcassonne in the Hérault department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

Two large lateral bearing stones have been preserved. The right stone is about 2.5 m long and 2.0 m high. The left one is about three feet long and one meter high. They are both 30 cm thick. The drywall is similar to that of the Lo Morrel dos Fados dolmen - the 25 m longest gallery grave in southern France, around 10 km from here.

The surroundings of the Chapelle de Centeilles show an abundance of structures and features: abrises , fountains and springs, 11 dolmens, a menhir and a ruined church.
