Dom Pérignon (pronunciation: dɔ̃ peʁiɲɔ̃ ) is a famous and high-priced champagne brand from Moët & Chandon . The name comes from the monk Dom Pérignon . The Dom Pérignon is usually offered as a cuvée made from the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties ; it is only produced as a vintage in good vintages . It is offered as a white wine and as a (rarer) rosé wine . A significantly longer storage will preserve the much later degorgierte as Oenothèque sold Dom Perignon.

The production volume is very high, it is probably one to two million bottles or more. However, it is only produced in selected years and matured for a long time.

history

After the French Revolution (1789 to 1799), Jean-Remy Moët bought the former Hautvillers Abbey in 1823 (1794 according to other sources) , where the monk Dom Pérignon had lived. In 1930 Moët and Chandon acquired the naming rights to the Dom Pérignon brand from the House of Mercier , which, however, had never used the name, and since 1936 they have been selling a prestige cuvée under the newly bought name. The idea for this came from the Englishman Laurence Venn. The 1936 grapes for Dom Pérignon were from the 1921 vintage. The 1921 vintage and the following 1926, 1928 (sold before the 1926 vintage), 1929 and 1934 were produced using the transvasion method , and it wasn't until 1943 that the first own cuvée followed, which made Dom Pérignon clear more different from Moët and Chandon's other champagne brands.

Trivia

The champagne brand also became known through the James Bond films , u. a. with the well-known saying from the film Goldfinger (1964): “For example, you never drink a 53 Dom Pérignon if it is above eight degrees. That would be just like listening to the Beatles without earmuffs! "
