The Domagkateliers were Europe's largest artists' colony at Domagkstraße 33 in today's Domagkpark , which is located in the north of the Schwabing district.

history

The artists' colony on the site of the former radio barracks has existed since around 1993 and in 2004 comprised around 250 studio rooms . The site is owned by the City of Munich and is self-administered by a non-profit GmbH . The studios, studios and band rehearsal rooms of over 200 artists were located in old barracks buildings . Every third Sunday of the month, some studios open their doors to those interested in art as part of Artists' Sunday . Once a year, usually on the third weekend in July, the Domagkateliers event takes place, at which all artist studios are open to the public.

From 2005 the first houses had to be closed in the course of the planned construction of the new Domagkpark district with up to 4,000 new apartments. Other houses were shut down in the years to come.

In the run-up to the closure of House 49 in July 2011, the artists called for demonstrations in the city center to draw attention to their situation. However, this could not prevent the demolition of this house. The WagnisArt cooperative built a residential complex on the property.

Since May 2009 only one house of the former barracks has been available to the artist community, house number 50. Since then, the studios have operated under the name "Städtisches Atelierhaus am Domagkpark". In addition to the 101 work studios and two guest studios, there is also a large exhibition room, Hall 50. The City of Munich provides Hall 50 with an exhibition area of approx. 200 m² to DomagkAteliers gGmbH free of charge.
